Quick answer
SEER2 is the efficiency rating for air conditioners since January 1, 2023. It uses a tougher test than the old SEER, so the same system gets a slightly lower number. Higher means more efficient — and in Texas, most new home systems must be at least 14.3 SEER2.
What SEER2 measures
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) is how much cooling a system delivers over a typical season for each unit of electricity it uses. Think miles per gallon: the higher the number, the less it costs to run.
Why the number changed in 2023
The Department of Energy updated the test to better match real homes, with more resistance in the ductwork. Under the tougher test, a system scores about 4–5% lower — so 15 SEER and 14.3 SEER2 describe roughly the same efficiency.
The minimum in Texas
Texas is in the Department of Energy's Southern region. New central air conditioners there must be at least 14.3 SEER2 for systems under 45,000 BTU — which covers most homes — and 13.8 SEER2 for larger ones.
Is a higher rating worth it?
Higher-rated systems cost more up front and save more every month. With North Texas's long cooling season, the savings add up faster than in mild climates. Our savings calculator estimates what an upgrade could save on your bill.
Ratings aren't everything
A high-SEER2 system that's the wrong size, or installed on leaky ducts, won't reach its rating. Proper sizing and installation matter as much as the number on the box.
